The incident happened around 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday during what the USMC described as “routine training.”

“The tragic loss of Pfc. Rubio is one felt across the 1st Marine Division,” said Maj. Gen. Thomas Savage, commanding general of the 1st Marine Division, on Friday. “He will be sorely missed, but his honorable service to his country will not be forgotten. All of us at the Blue Diamond will keep him and his family in our thoughts in prayers.”

The USMC said the tactical vehicle mishap did not happen in a training related to Exercise Steel Knight 25, which is an annual series of training missions led by the 1st Marine Division that focuses on ground fires, warfare tactics and other capabilities.
